Samsonova Eases Past Collins

Liudmilla Samsonova began her title defence with a straight sets drubbing of Danielle Collins in the opening round.

The Russian, ranked no. 18th in the world, was not broken in the match as she saved both the break points that she faced. In contrast, she had six chances to break Collins’ serve and Samsonova capitalised on four of those chances to win the one hour and 15 minute contest 6-1, 6-3.

Samsonova, who had beaten Kaia Kanepi in the Washington Open final last year, had reached the fifth WTA final of her career earlier this year in Abu Dhabi. But she could not add to her four titles, going down to Belinda Bencic.

Samsonova has improved her season record to 17-16 across levels and she is 9-8 on hard courts.

A win on Wednesday will take her to a fourth quarterfinal of the season. In addition to the runner-up finish in Abu Dhabi, she was a quarterfinalist in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Bad Homburg.

Cirstea Battles Past Martic

World no. 32 Sorana Cirstea battled past Petra Martic in a tough two set contest on Monday.

After both players exchanged an early break in the opening set, Cirstea got a second break late in the set to take a 1-0 lead. She however conceded a break early in the second and found herself 2-5 down. But fought back with a double break, only to see Martic break again and send the set into the tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, the Romanian saved as many as seven break points before converting a fourth match point for a 6-3, 7-6 (15-13) victory in an hour and 51 minutes.

Cirstea, who was a semifinalist in Miami and a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells, will be looking to reach a third tour level quarterfinal of the season. She also won a WTA challenger title on clay in Reus this year.

Samsonova v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

It is expected to be an intriguing contest as both players have looked good this season. The defending champion Samsonova, who is now 6-0 in Washington, will be a slight favourite though to continue her charge towards another title.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Samsonova to win: 3/5
