Evans Finally Registers a Win

The last that Evans won a main draw match at the highest level was in the quarterfinal of the Barcelona Open where he overcame the much-fancied Francisco Cerundolo. He went down to Carlos Alcaraz in the following match and since then had lost seven matches in a row before coming into this tournament.

A first round bye followed and while he was a favourite going up against Gregoire Barrere there wasn’t much to choose between the two as Evans starts off at 4/5 odds.

Barrere scythed through the Evans serve in the first set, breaking it a whopping three times but that was followed by Evans retaliating with three breaks of his own in the second to level things out.

In the decider, Evans missed four chances to break his opponent in the fourth game and three more in the sixth before finally grabbing the much-needed break. Soon after, a much-relieved Evans served it out to clinch the victory.

He now has a chance to make it two in two.

Shevchenko Shocks Korda

Sebastian Korda was returning to the surface which had seen him gain a lot of success in the first half of the season and had started out a 1/4 favourite against his Russian opponent.

41 minutes into the encounter, Shevchenko had prevented Korda from serving out the opening set once but failed to do it the second time and gone a set down.

Things were expected to get a lot easier for Korda but in a second set filled with break-points – there were a total of 19 of them in this set alone – Shevchenko took advantage of a flailing opponent to win the tie-breaker.

Shevchenko still had no business to win when he fell 2-4 behind in the decider but then out of nowhere broke his opponent twice to grab the last four games of the encounter and seal his spot in the last 16.

This follows Shevchenko’s opening round win over Maxime Cressy who could have been put down to his opponent’s poor form. Can he now make it three shock victories in a row?
