Jaqueline Cristian v Kateryna Baindl Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the first round of the Bucharest Open on clay in 2017, Cristian coming from behind to win in three sets.

Cristian Follows Up Giant Killing with Routine Victory

Cristian created a major upset in the first round when she knocked out the top seed Marie Bouzkova, the world number 39.

But, from being the underdog in that match, she was very much the favourite in her second round match with the Colombian qualifier, Emiliana Arango.

And she justified that status with a straight sets win, although it was not as easy as it might have been, twice coming from a break down in the first set, before going on to win it with two more breaks of her own.

She took an early grip on the second set with another break, only to be pegged back when she dropped her own serve again. Unfortunately for the Colombian, parity lasted only as long as it took Cristian to break her again, giving the Romanian the chance to serve out.

Baindl’s Two Contrasting Victories in Prague

Baindl who reached the final in Hungary on clay recently, had not won a match on hard courts this year since being knocked out of the third round of the Australian Open by Jelena Ostapenko.

She has now improved on that with two victories, albeit of very different natures.

In the first round she met a familiar face in the form of fellow Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, and, although she won the first set, the qualifier rallied to take the second, requiring Baindl to reassert her control in the third set, winning the last four games.

She would not necessarily have been feeling confident in her next match with Jule Niemeier, the German having played herself into some form recently.

In the event, though, it proved to be something of an anti-climax. After Baindl had won the first five games, the German, who was struggling with an injury, decided she could not continue, and she retired.

Cristian v Baindl Prediction and Tip

This match could go either way. Baindl is the higher ranked player and the seed, but it is Cristian who has been making the headlines in Prague after knocking out the top seed.

This may well need three sets to decide it.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cristian to win: 9/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 1/1
