Cristian Beats Baindl in Three

Jaqueline Cristian continued her fine form in Prague as the Romanian reached her first tour level semifinal of the season with a three-set win over Kateryna Baindl in the quarterfinal on Friday.

The world no. 122 saved three of nine break points and converted 6 of 13 to beat the Ukrainian, world no. 98, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

Cristian had begun her campaign with an upset win over top seed and home favourite Marie Bouzkova in the first round. The Romanian followed the 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 opening round victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Emiliana Arango in the second round.

Cristian had very little success at the tour level this year, coming into the tournament with a 3-7 season record. But she has been in fantastic form in lower level tournaments, winning all three of the ITF finals that she featured in this year.

The 25-year-old will be looking to reach a second career final on Saturday. She had finished runner-up in Linz in her only WTA final so far.

Lucky Loser Hibino’s Impressive Run Continues

Lucky loser Nao Hibino is into the semifinals of the Prague Open following a straight sets thrashing of local hope Terezza Martincova in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Hibino, who is also in the doubles final in Prague, needed just an hour and 11 minutes to rout Martincova 6-1, 6-2. The Japanese player was broken twice in the match, while she converted 7 of 12 break points to beat the world no. 109.

Hibino, who was beaten by Emiliana Arango in the second qualifying round, had made it to the main draw as a lucky loser. She then ousted Sara Errani 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the opening round before defeating Viktória Hrunčáková 6-1, 7-5 in the second round.

Hibino is a five-time finalist at the tour level and has won two titles over her career. She is 32-21 across levels this season, having won one hard court ITF title this year.

Can she reach a sixth career final with a win on Saturday?
