Stephens in Need of Wins

Sloane Stephens didn’t have a good return onto the hard courts where she was beaten by compatriot Lauren Davis 7-6(8) 3-6 6-1 in the opening round of the Washington Open. The American has had a fair season so far with 18 wins and 14 losses but she would certainly like to add a few more.

A good chance will come in round one of the Canadian where she’s playing a player she’s beaten before. Form has been up and down for Stephens but that’s been the case for much of her career anyways. Playing on hard should give her back some confidence but it will take a while for her to find her rhythm.

It’s the same thing for her opponent so they should be equal in that regard however Stephens has the experience on hard courts to fall back on. That’s not the case for her opponent.

Either way, Stephens is in need of wins and she’s likely to win on hard courts as opposed to some other surface.

Kalinina Thrashed by Brady

Anhelina Kalinina made her return to the tennis courts with a match in Washington against Jennifer Brady 6-2 6-1. It wasn’t a pretty match as she was easily beaten by the American in two sets which shouldn’t give anybody much confidence in her level.

She’s been playing on a rather questionable level for a while now and turning things around on hard courts looks unlikely. It’s not her best surface and never was so turning things around will be very tough in that regard.

She’s had a fair season with 18 wins and 17 losses but her record on hard is 9-8 so nothing special. She’s beaten Stephens before but only on clay, the hard court match was won by Stephens.

Losing to a player that didn’t play in over a year isn’t a good thing and likely didn’t impact her confidence too much either considering what a beatdown it was. Can she recover quickly for this event? Seems unlikely.

Stephens v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

While neither player is looking very strong right now, Stephens should have the edge on hard courts.
