World number seven Cori Gauff will face the ninth-ranked Maria Sakkari in the final of the 2023 Washington Open on Sunday, August 6. Get the predictions and odds of this Cori Gauff v Maria Sakkari match along with its preview, head to head, and tips here.

Cori Gauff v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

This has been an interesting rivalry with Sakkari leading 4-1 on head to head. Gauff’s only win came on the clay courts of the 2021 Rome Open while Sakkari is 3-0 in hardcourt competitions.

Gauff Sends Samsonova Packing

There wasn’t a lot to choose between Gauff and her semifinal opponent Luidmilla Samsonova but the scoreline suggested there was a healthy gap between the two.

Gauff was on court for an hour and 43 minutes and faced five break-points in the match but not only did she save every single one of them, she also overcame her opponent’s serve on three occasions in the encounter.

The American was 3-0 up very quickly and while she missed another break-point in the set, there was no testing her and she clinched the lead 6-3.

She squandered four break-points in the third game of the second set, before grabbing the 2-1 lead. Gauff was then forced to save three of her own in the very next game and two more in the sixth. In the ninth, she broke Samsonova for the second time in the set to clinch the win and make it to her second final of the season.

The last time she played a final was in the first week of the season in January. This has been a long time coming.

Sakkari Shocks Pegula

For the second match in a row, Sakkari had started off a second favourite in the encounter and for the second successive, she clinched a surprise win.

Having routed Madison Keys in straight sets in the quarterfinal, Sakkari overcame Jessica Pegula 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to make it to her first final of the season. Interestingly, she has had five semifinals this season before this but never once entered the title-decider.

Sakkari, who had played both her previous two matches on Friday because of weather-related scheduling issues, came back strongly on Saturday to grab two breaks of serves and the first set.

In the second, Sakkari went 3-1 up only to get broken two times and for a moment it looked like Pegula had a chance to steal the march on her opponent. Sakkari, however, thwarted any such chances of a comeback as she sent her opponent packing with a couple more breaks of serves.

She now has a chance to win her first title since 2019 but standing in her way is one of the most talented players on the circuit at the moment.

Gauff v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

Gauff holds a slight edge which can be seen from the odds too. We also think 8/11 represents a fair value for her win and we would be going with that here. Might make it to the third set too.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Gauff to win: 8/11
