After having made the semifinal at Wimbledon, Medvedev took a bit of a break from tennis before returning to feature in this tournament in Toronto.
And following a first round bye, he was tipped to ease past the 66th-ranked Matteo Arnaldi. Ease he did, but not before Arnaldi had held on to his serve till the very end in the second set before Medvedev found a way to win it.
Medvedev, a two-time finalist and a one-time winner at the Canadian Open, came through 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 26 minutes to seal his third round spot.
The Russian number one faced three break-points in the encounter but saved each one of them even as he overcame his opponent’s serve three times in the encounter. The third of those came when Arnaldi served to stay in the match but Medvedev pressurised him into going 15-40 down and then winning it off his very first match-point.
He will start off a favourite to ease his way to the quarterfinal here.

Musetti Overturns a Solid Kokkinakis Showing
While Musetti was a favourite coming into this encounter there was always that sense that Kokkinakis had the game in a hardcourt match to test out his opponent.
And that’s exactly what he did when the Aussie broke Musetti in the very first game of the match and went on to grab the set.
In the second set as well, Musetti faced three break-points without having had the chance to break Kokkinakis but thankfully for him, he saved them all. Another two went by and Kokkinakis failed to convert them before Musetti got an opening in the 12th game of the second set.
That was his first break-point and Musetti converted it to level thing out before going 2-0 up in the decider. And while Kokkinakis broke right back, Musetti retaliated with a break of serve when his opponent was serving to stay in the set – and match – for the second time in the match.
