Iga Swiatek v Karolina Muchova Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from their two meetings. Muchova won in Prague in 2019, while Swiatek won at the French Open final this year. Both the matches needed three sets to decide the winner.

Swiatek Knocks Out Pliskova

Iga Swiatek extended her perfect head-to-head record against Karolina Pliskova to 3-0 as the Polish player ousted the Czech in the second round of the Canadian Open on Wednesday.

The top seed, who had received a first-round bye, needed an hour and 50 minutes to edge out the world no. 23, 7-6 (7-6), 6-2.

Twice Swiatek went up a break in the first set, but Pliskova responded with an immediate break on both the occasions to stay on serve. Eventually the set was decided in a nail-biting tiebreaker, which was won by Swiatek.

The world no. 1 then took charge of the second set, racing to a 5-1 lead following a double break. Pliskova did get a break back but Swiatek made sure she closed out the contest before any more drama.

With the win, Swiatek improved to 48-6 in 2023 and extended her current win streak to six matches. The French Open champion had won five consecutive matches to claim the Warsaw Open title 10 days ago.

Swiatek also hasn’t dropped a set since her surprise quarterfinal defeat to Elina Svitolina at Wimbledon. A three-time champion from six finals in 2023, Swiatek will be looking to reach an 11th consecutive quarterfinal on Thursday. The Australian Open is the only tournament where she fell before the quarterfinals this year.

Muchova Marches On

World no. 17 Karolina Muchova marched into the round of 16 in Montreal with a second consecutive straight sets win in the tournament on Wednesday.

Muchova, who had begun her campaign with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win over Anastasia Potapova in the first round, needed an hour and 49 minutes to dispatch Romania’s Sorana Cirstea on Wednesday.

After both players traded an early break in the first set, the Czech got a second break late in the set to take a one-set-to-love lead.

Cirstea started the second well, getting an early break to lead 0-2, but she couldn’t hold on to the lead for long as Muchova drew level soon and then edged ahead with a second break before closing out the contest 7-5, 6-4.

The win improved Muchova to 26-10 at the tour level this year. The French Open finalist will hope to keep the momentum going in the round of 16. A win Thursday will take her into her fifth quarterfinal of the year.
