Third seed Casper Ruud began his Toronto campaign with a straight sets win over Jiri Lehecka in the second round on Wednesday.
The match was won in straight sets but it was a tricky one for the Norwegian, who needed to save two set points in the opening set tiebreak before sealing it and taking a 1-0 lead.
Neither player was able to break in the first set, but it was Ruud, who got the only break of the match in the seventh game of the second set to clinch the contest 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
Ruud, who was a quarterfinalist in 2021 and a semifinalist in 2022, is now a win away from reaching a third straight quarterfinal at the ATP 1000 tournament.
The world no. 5 had a terrible start to the season, failing to win consecutive matches in the first quarter. But he regained form as the tour moved to clay in April. Ruud reached three finals on clay, winning the title in Estoril and finishing runner-up at the French Open and in Bastad.
While he has a 29-15 overall record this season, he is 6-6 on hard courts. He will be eager to build on the start that he has got in Toronto as he looks to improve the season record on hard courts.

Davidovich Fokina Stuns Zverev
After trouncing JJ Wolf in the first round, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina stunned the 13th seed Alexander Zverev with a straight sets drubbing in the second round on Wednesday.
Davidovich Fokina, who had needed just 64 minutes to hand Wolf a 6-0, 6-2 shellacking, took 62 minutes to beat the world no. 16, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.
The Spaniard did not face a single break point against Zverev, while he converted all four of the break points that he held to sail into the round of 16 for the first time at the Canadian Open. Davidovich Fokina had lost in the opening round in both his previous appearances.
The 24-year-old, who was a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells earlier this year, will be aiming to reach a sixth quarterfinal of the season on Thursday.

This is expected to be a close contest. Davidovich Fokina is looking really dangerous in this tournament, while Ruud, who found his rhythm on clay, looked good on his return to hard court. It will need three sets to separate the two with the more accomplished Ruud edging through.
