There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one. Samsonova won last year in Guadalajara while Sabalenka’s victory came earlier this season in Adelaide.

Sabalenka Stretched a Tad by Martic

Sabalenka was in her first match since her semifinal exit at Wimbledon and she needed a bit of time to come through for her victory. The world number two was on court for almost two hours despite registering a straight-set win over Petra Martic in her second round encounter.

Following a first round bye, Sabalenka registered a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win, her 21st hardcourt victory of the season to go with just three defeats.

The Australian Open champion looked to be headed towards an easy win as she broke Martic in the fourth game after having missed a chance to do that in the second. Soon after she had served it out to grab the first set.

In the second set, however, it was Martic who went 2-0 up and was leading 4-2 at one stage. Three successive breaks of serve levelled things out and while Sabalenka struggled to hold in the 12th game, she managed to push the set into a tie-breaker.

Martic led 3-0 there too before Sabalenka won four in a row and soon had a couple of match-points. She converted the second to march into round three.

Samsonova Sends Qinwen Packing

One thought it could have been a sterling battle between Samsonova and Qinwen Zheng with not much to choose between the two but it turned out to be a damp squib for the neutrals.

Not so much for Samsonova though, who needed a mere hour and 16 minutes to make it through to the next stage with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Samsonova was quick off the blocks as she broke Qinwen twice to take a 5-1 lead and while she lost her serve at 5-2, she would break yet again to grab the set. The second set was even easier as the Russian did not face a single break-point while breaking her opponent’s serve twice.

This follows a three-set win over Katerina Siniakova in the first round for Samsonova. She had also earlier made the semifinal at the Washington Open where her campaign was ended by the eventual winner Cori Gauff.

Can she test a slightly rusty Sabalenka in this one?

Sabalenka v Samsonova Prediction and Tip
