Collins Ends Sakkari’s Run

After having had a rather underwhelming season all around, Collins looks to have found some of her rhythm in this competition.

Having started out as a qualifier here with wins over three-set wins Eugenie Bouchard and Emina Bektas, Collins was a second-favourite in both her main draw matches here. And she won them both rather easily.

Collins had taken down Elina Svitolina in her opener, winning 6-2, 6-2 against her in-form Ukrainian opponent. In the second, Collins made it past Maria Sakkari in straight sets too, needing an hour and 27 minutes to overcome the Greek number one.

In a match filled with multiple breaks service breaks, Collins dropped her own serve four times but was able to get past Sakkari on seven occasions.

She made it through in an hour and 27 minutes to clinch the victory.

Fernandez Showing Some Signs of a Turnaround

Since reaching the quarterfinal at the Auckland Open in January this year, Fernandez had featured in 14 tournaments before the start of this one in Montreal. And in none of those 14 did Fernandez win successive matches.

Which is why it would have come as a huge relief for the local player to have clinched a three-set win over Beatriz Haddad Maia and entered the third round there, thereby grabbing consecutive victories in the process.

Fernandez did not have it easy by any stretch and was on court for nearly three hours as they were all level in the third set at 3-3.

The former US Open runner-up then held her serve and off the second break-point she got in the decider, broke Haddad Maia. Soon after she had served it out to love to advance to the third round.

The question is if she can continue a similar fighting spirit about her against Collins.

Collins v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

These are two players who might not have expected to make the third round, at least not both of them together. Which is also why it could become a tough battle for that elusive place in the quarterfinal and we could see a third set here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
