Karen Khachanov v Andy Murray Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2017 French Open in which Murray won in straight sets.

Khachanov Returns after Two-Month Layoff

Khachanov was having the time of his career this season as he reached the semifinal of the Australian Open and the quarterfinal at the French Open, two results which helped him make it to the top 10 of the ATP Rankings.

Unfortunately for Khachanov, after putting on a fighting display in his French Open quarterfinals against Novak Djokovic, he suffered a stress fracture and a partial fracture in sacrum S1 bone, making it impossible for him to take to court.

He missed Wimbledon – for the second year in running after having not been allowed to participate in it last year – and all the tournaments in the lead-up to that Grand Slam too.

Since then, Khachanov hasn’t played in any competitive tennis either, having tried to make his return at the Canadian Open, a tournament in which he has made the semifinal on two previous occasions. He failed to do that and will now try to resume action in Cincinnati.

There will be an obvious rustiness and question-marks over match-fitness here for the Russian.

Murray Injury a Worry

At the time of writing there is no news on whether or not Murray will be featuring in this competition. This was after he was forced to pull out of his third round match at the Canadian Masters because of an abdominal strain and there are doubts now about his fitness for US Open as well.

Before that, Murray had overcome the pair of Lorenzo Sonego and Max Purcell in the first two rounds.

Murray had begun the grass court swing rather well with successive title wins on the Challenger circuit but followed that up an opening exit at the Queen’s Club competition and a second round loss at Wimbledon.

He is up against a player who is returning after over two months as well and if this match actually goes through, we could see an interesting one that goes the distance.

Khachanov v Murray Prediction and Tip

Khachanov might not have had it easy because of his match fitness issues but at the same time if Murray does take to court there could be a chance of some ginger play from him because of his own injury. We could see a close one here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
