Rybakina Battles Past Kasatkina

Elena Rybakina saved a match point in the final set tiebreak before converting her fifth match point to complete a comeback win over Daria Kasatkina in a three-and-a-half hour marathon which ended in the wee hours of Saturday.

Both players broke each other 10 times each in the match. While Rybakina saved 11 break points, Kasatkina saved 14 of them in a gripping contest that swung from one end to the other before the Kazakh clinched the contest 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8).

This was a second come-from-behind three-set win for the third seed Rybakina in the tournament after she beat Jennifer Brady 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the second round.

Rybakina had followed that win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Sloane Stephens.

Rybakina, who reached her first three WTA 1000 finals this year, is on the brink of reaching a fourth final at that level. She had earlier won the titles in Indian Wells and Rome, but finished runner-up in Miami.

Overall, the 24-year-old Australian Open finalist is 40-9 this season. Can the five-time tour level champion reach a 15th WTA final of her career?

Samsonova Knocks Out Bencic

No. 15 seed Liudmila Samsonova reached her first ever WTA 1000 semifinal after she knocked out 12th seed Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Samsonova, the world no. 18, was not broken in the match as she saved all five break points that she faced. In contrast, she held five break points and converted two of them for a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

The Russian served 8 aces and won 83% points on her first serve. For the second consecutive week she will be featuring in the semifinal. Last week, she reached the semifinal at the Washington Open before going down to Coco Gauff.

Samsonova had a tough start to the Montreal Open, as she scored a come-from-behind win over Kateřina Siniaková in the first round. She then ousted Qinwen Zheng in straight sets in the second round, before knocking out the second seed Aryna Sabalenka in three sets in the third round.

This will be her third semifinal appearance of the season, which includes a runner-up finish in Abu Dhabi. Can the four-time tour level champion reach a sixth WTA final on Saturday?

Rybakina v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Rybakina has not beaten Samsonova before, so that may play on her mind. Also, the late night marathon would have certainly taken a toll on her physically as well as mentally. So it will be interesting to see how quickly she recovers from that contest as she takes on a much fresher Samsonova, who breezed past Bencic. Going by how they have fared this season, Rybakina holds the edge, but the sapping late-night encounter gives Samsonova a real chance as well. Expect this match to go the distance as well.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Rybakina to win: 1/1
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 26.5 games in the match: 5/6
