Haddad Maia has been a top-10 player having hit the mark in June this season. Since then she has fallen a couple of spots down to 12th but has managed to maintain her consistency across the competitions.

A semifinalist at the French Open, Haddad Maia did not have the greatest of starts on grass, losing two of the three matches she played on grass but she did well at Wimbledon. Wins over Yulia Putintseva, Jaqueline Cristian and Sorana Cirstea took her to the fourth round where she was forced to retire from her match against Elena Rybakina because of an injury.

Returning to action at the Montreal Open last week, Haddad Maia did not waste too much getting past Magdalena Frech but found her match in the second.

The Brazilian player fell to a three-set defeat at the hands of the former US Open runner-up, Leylah Fernandez and as a result of that, might fall a few spots further on the rankings charts.

And to top it all, she will be up against a player who is ranked 17th in the world.

Muchova Pushes Swiatek in Montreal

In a bizarre twist of performances, Muchova had fallen to 235th on the world rankings charts last August. Today, after a string of solid performances including a finals appearance at the French Open where she pushed Iga Swiatek to a third set, Muchova has risen to 17th in the world.

Muchova played in only one grass tournament after that, losing her opener at Wimbledon, and then made the second round of the Poland Open. A shock three-set defeat at the hands of the 7/1 underdog Rebecca Sramkova meant there were a few question-marks over her form in hardcourt competitions but she looks to have dispelled them at the Canadian Open.

The Czech player overcame Anastasia Potapova and Sorana Cirstea in the first two rounds there before taking Swiatek to another three-setter in her third round encounter.

And while Muchova was beaten by the world number one, she will definitely feel she has the game to take on the world at this time.
