Returning to hardcourt tennis at the Canadian Open, Kvitova had an opening round bye before edging past Camila Giorgi in a three-set encounter in the second round.

Blinkova Hoping to Climb Back Up the Rankings
In her first hardcourt competition since her struggles in the first half of the season on this surface, Blinkova did manage a first round win at the Canadian Open last week.
However, she was made to struggle by Shuai Zhang in that opener and that’s a bit of an indicator given the kind of issues that her Chinese opponent has endured in recent times, both on and off the court.
And in the second round, Blinkova was ousted by fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina in straight sets.
Blinkova now enters this tournament ranked 37th, having fallen three spots from her career-best, but she had also not featured in this tournament last year making it easier for her to defend the points.
Speaking of Blinkova’s record in Cincinnati, she has tried to make it to the main draw twice before here and failed both times. This will be her debut.
