Yoshihito Nishioka v Gregoire Barrere Head to Head

Nishioka leads the head to head 1-0 after defeating Barrere 6-4, 7-6 (1), in qualifiers for the 2021 Italian Open. The match was played on outdoor clay.

Can Nishioka Regain His Confidence?

Nishioka started the 2023 season strongly with some good performances leading up to the Australian Open. He defeated the current world number 6, Holger Rune, in the first of the Adelaide Internationals.

He reached the fourth round in the Australian and French Open; securing straight set victories over Mikael Ymer, Dalibor Svrcina and Mackenzie McDonald on the Melbourne hard courts.

These performances lead him to reach a career-high ranking of world number 24, on the 19th of June.

Since then, Nishioka has struggled to find his highest level and has faltered in his last four ATP first round matches. His recent form has caused a ranking drop and levelled his season win-loss record at 13 apiece.

Nishioka will go into this match knowing that he can beat Barrere and will be looking to regain the necessary confidence needed for another deep run in a slam.

Barrere Seeks To Further Improve His Ranking

Barrere started the year as world number 90 and has steadily climbed up the rankings throughout the season.

His hard court win-loss record equals Nishioka’s at 8-8 whilst his overall record for the season is positive at 18-17.

Barrere’s best victory on hard courts came at the Miami Open, where he comfortably defeated the current world number 13, Cameron Norrie, 6-3,6-2.

With a third-round appearance at the Italian Open and a semi-final at Eastbourne, Barrere had some notably good performances on the clay and grass. As a result, his ranking peaked at world number 49 in early July.

He has played four left handers on the tour this season and has won on three of these occasions.

Recently on the North American hard courts, Barrere competed in the Washington Citi Open and at the Canadian Open. He reached the second round in Washington after loosing to Dan Evans and was defeated in the first round by the resurgent Berrettini in Toronto.

Barrere won’t be intimidated by this matchup and may see this as a realistic chance of advancing to the second round of another Masters 1000 event.

Nishioka v Barrere Prediction and Tip

This match could go either way. Nishioka has the more impressive achievements this season so far, but arguably Barrere has been the more consistent. Following the head to head advantage, I suspect Nishioka may edge it, but expect a competitive tussle either way.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
