Bencic Solid But Hoping to Make a Deeper Plunge

In the first two months of this season, Bencic had stormed to the final of two hardcourt competitions and won them both.

Bencic failed to translate that form into the Australian Open, Indian Wells Open or in Miami but came into her own yet again in Charleston where she made the final. That time she lost to Ons Jabeur.

Since then she has entered the fourth round at Wimbledon, quarterfinal in Washington and made another last eight appearance at the Montreal Open – winning eight of the 11 matches in this period – but hasn’t quite managed to go deeper than that.

She now enters a tournament where she has a 5-6 win-loss record, a rather poor one when one compares it with her own records at the other WTA 1000 hardcourt competitions. Can Bencic break that hoodoo at this year’s edition?

Bucsa Breezes Through the Qualifiers

In two matches in a row at the qualifiers here in Cincinnati, Bucsa was the second favourite. And both times, she not only clinched a place in the next round but also did that with utmost ease.

She first crushed the upcoming star Linda Fruhvirotva 6-0, 6-4 in her opener before scything through Varvara Gracheva in the second, winning 6-3, 6-2 to make it to the main draw.

This follows an interesting hardcourt swing in the first quarter of the year for Bucsa, who made it to the third round at the Australian Open after having started out as a qualifier. She would then enter round two in Indian Wells, having again made it through the qualifying rounds.

And while she went through a string of five successive defeats during the clay swing, Bucsa sits a good 20 places ahead of her season-start ranking of 105th in the world.

Can she now put up a show against the former world number four?

Bencic v Bucsa Prediction and Tip

Bencic should not have a lot of difficulties getting past Bucsa despite her opponent’s good form in the qualifiers. Expecting a straight-set victory.
