Qinwen Zheng v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Head to Head

In their only previous meeting, Zheng had beaten Sasnovich in three sets in the first round of the Australian Open.

Qinwen 1-2 in US Open Swing

Qinwen had opted to participate in a clay court competition in Palermo after Wimbledon and went on to lift the first ever WTA 250 title of her career. That had come on the back of four successive defeats immediately preceding that tournament win.

Immediately after that tournament win, Qinwen arrived on American soil with some confidence but has failed to get going so far.

At the Washington Open, she fell to a straight-set loss in the very first round losing to Madison Keys. In Montreal, Qinwen managed to overcome Marta Kostyuk in a three-setter but then fell to Luidmilla Samsonova in the second.

Qinwen will now be making her Cincinnati Open debut and will hope to add on to her hardcourt record at WTA 1000 events this season – she has already made the fourth round at the Miami Open earlier this year.

Can she overcome her qualifier opponent?

Sasnovich Scrapes Through to the Main Draw

Sasnovich has a solid overall record in hardcourt competitions, especially for a player ranked 74th but it isn’t good enough to get her a direct entry into the main draw of a WTA 1000 tournament.

As a result, she was forced to play in the qualifiers in which she was taken to three sets by both, Anna Bogdan and Alycia Parks. While the Bogdan encounter did not quite test her fully, two of the three sets against Parks, including the decider, went into a tie-breaker, making things very difficult for the Belarusian.

She will now look back at some of her performances in hardcourt surfaces from earlier this year where she reached the second round – it’s happened four times already this season.

In none of those matches, however, Sasnovich was facing a player ranked as high as her opponent in this one, making it a huge challenge for her.

Can Sasnovich make it her fifth opening round win in hardcourt tennis for the season?

Zheng v Sasnovich Prediction and Tip

Zheng is a favourite here but we think the match could be very keenly fought and a third set might be on offer.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
