Martic Goes Out in Montreal Second Round

After having eased past Cristina Buca in her opener at the Canadian Open, Martic was drawn to play the second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the second round. While Martic gave her a fight, taking her into a second set tie-breaker in the process, Sabalenka proved to be too strong for the Croat.

Overall though, Martic hasn’t had too bad a season with the 32-year-old entering the Cincinnati Open with a win-loss record of 22-17 for the year.

It’s her record in outdoor hardcourt competitions that’s an issue. From the 12 matches that Martic has played this season, she has won four.

She has also barely done too much of note at the Cincinnati Open, especially since she made the third round here in her very first appearance in 2011. Since then she has won just two matches here.

Can Martic turn things around and win her first main draw match here since 2018?

Navarro Continues to Improve

She is just 22 and has already hit her career-best ranking of 53rd in the world. And Navarro could come close to breaking into the top 50 of the rankings if she manages to win this opening round contest against Martic, having come into this tournament on the back of a season in which she has lifted three ITF titles.

Now while it’s been a season to remember for Navarro who has risen from her season-low ranking of 149th in the world, there’s one thing to remember in all of this.

All of her performances have come on clay with the American reaching the final of the Bastad Open as well.

In four previous hardcourt competitions she has played this year, Navarro has barely done anything of note. Sure, there have been wins over Caty McNally and Cristina Bucsa in Monterrey and Indian Wells, but those are the only two in the main draw of any such tournaments.

Which is why while Navarro could have been expected to do an excellent job on clay, there could be question-marks over her chances in a hardcourt competition.

Martic v Navarro Prediction and Tip

Navarro is 1/1 to win this, a second favourite because of the aforementioned reasons which means Martic’s winning odds of 4/5 sound tempting.
