Overall Isner leads Thompson 3-1 on head to head with the Aussie having won his only match in their last meeting in 2020 at the New York Open.

As forgettable seasons, this has been one of the worst for a former top-10 player Isner. You take his Dallas Open finals appearance out of the equation and Isner has won a mere four matches in the entire season.
Making matters worse for the American, he has lost in the first round at nine tournaments this year. That’s nine of the 12 competitions Isner has featured in in 2023.
What’s become more and more of an issue for Isner is his serving. It was the biggest weapon in his arsenal but those days look to be behind him at the moment. He still has managed to take opponents to tie-breakers – a sign of how difficult it has usually been to break his serve – but it’s not been as proficient as earlier.
The most prime example of this was at the Los Cabos Open where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round, cobbling up just six games in the entire match.

Thompson Forced to Come Through the Qualifiers
Despite having a brilliant season on grass and following it up with a quarterfinal appearance at the Washington Open, Thompson was forced to come through the qualifiers in this tournament.
And he did so well, overcoming Alexandre Muller in a hard-fought three-setter and then easing past Marc-Andrea Huesler in straight sets.
What will give him a lot of confidence coming into this match against Isner is a combination of his own recent performances and his opponent’s form. Not to mention that Thompson has beaten Isner in the past.
Thompson’s performance in Washington will be something that should push up his chances even further with the Aussie having defeated Kevin Anderson, Adrian Mannarino and Christopher Eubanks in successive matches.
With Isner struggling to get going at his best, Thompson will think he has a chance here.

Not surprisingly, it’s Thompson who starts off a favourite here and we will have to go with that. Also, it could be a good chance to look at the games market which typically gives a very high ‘over’ for Isner’s matches. That may not continue and there could be money to be made there.
