Sinner Hoping to Build on Canadian Masters Win

21-year-old Sinner will hope to celebrate his birthday this week with another solid performance at the Cincinnati Masters after what he achieved last week on Toronto.

The Wimbledon semifinalist featured in his ATP Masters 1000 competition final and went on to lift his first ever such title when he defeated Alex de Minaur in the title-decider.

While Sinner had the fortune of a relatively easier draw, Tommy Paul and de Minaur being the only players in the top 20 that he faced, this title was long time coming. He has done his bit in retaining his consistency at the highest level, and that tournament win there was a culmination of all the effort that he put in.

What it also did was scoot him up to sixth in the rankings – his best ever.

Sinner has always exuded quiet confidence in his career but a tournament win like this could turn out to be a springboard for further, major successes.

For now though he will be hoping to navigate through a far trickier draw in Cincinnati as he looks to repeat the Canadian Masters success.

Lajovic Shocks Cerundolo

In what was one of the upsets of the first round, Lajovic found a way to get past Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.

Lajovic, who had stunned Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw of this competition, overcame Cerundolo 6-3, 6-4 to register his third successive straight-set win.

In a match that lasted a mere hour and 13 minutes, Lajovic found a way to get past his opponent’s serve on three occasions. The Serb also dropped his serve once but that was when he was serving for the match at 5-2 – also squandering away a match-point – but he then scraped his way past Cerundolo off the second opportunity he got.

This showing follows a third round appearance for Lajovic at his last hardcourt competition appearance which had come in Miami.

Against Sinner though, things could get a lot tougher and it looks highly unlikely that he will find a way past the newly-crowned Canadian Masters winner.
