Garcia Form Showing Signs of Crumbling

Around this time last year, Garcia had gone on a roll on tennis courts. She was winning matches with consummate ease, would go on to add four WTA titles to her kitty which had consisted of seven over the past decade and would break into the top 10 of the WTA Rankings.

Garcia would end the season ranked fourth in the world, also her career-best ranking, and for her to have done that this late in her career spoke volumes about her grit.

Unfortunately for Garcia, things haven’t quite been the same this season.

The title wins have dried up, and in more recent times, even the wins have been conspicuous by their absence.

Since losing to Marie Bouzkova in the third round at Wimbledon, Garcia has gone down to Marta Kostyuk in Washington and Bouzkova again in Montreal to make it three successive losses.

And she now starts off against an inconsistent but a tricky opponent here. Can the Frenchwoman find a way past Stephens?

Stephens Wins against Cocciaretto

Stephens’ problems have typically been the same over the years. There are days it feels like she belongs to the top 20 and at times she plays like a player outside of the top 100.

And that’s what reflects in her win-loss record and her ranking which has never seen her get better than where she was in 2020 – 24th in the world.

Currently ranked 38th in the world, she had entered this tournament on the back of six wins and nine defeats in hardcourt competitions this season. And while she was a favourite against Elisabetta Cocciaretto, there was always a question-mark about how things might go.

As it turned out, Stephens was on court for an hour and 18 minutes and while she dropped her own serve twice, the American was able to get past her opponent’s serve on five occasions. in doing so, she won 7-5, 6-2 and sealed her second round berth.

Stephens now faces a far tougher opponent here but one who is gasping for form too.

Garcia v Stephens Prediction and Tip

There is absolutely nothing between these two but as far as confidence goes, Stephens will be feeling a lot better. Backing her to win this at 11/10.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Stephens to win: 11/10
