Muchova Overcomes Haddad Maia

It’s not often do you see a world number 17 take on a 19th-ranked player in the very first round of a WTA 1000 event. But that’s how the cookie crumbled in the opener here in Cincinnati with Muchova drawn to face the world number 10 Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Muchova was in early strife as she fell 1-3 down and with a second break of serve going against her, she was facing the loss of the first set at 2-5. The Czech player came back to level things out at 5-5, then faced another serving of the set at 5-6 before breaking back and pushing the set into a tie-breaker.

Haddad Maia overcame jitters of not having served it out thrice to win the tie-breaker but Muchova had gained enough confidence by then.

She raced away to three breaks of serves in the second set and even when she failed to break early in the third, Muchova gained the break she needed in the 10th game. That was also how she won the match.

Muchova will hope to make it to her best showing in this tournament by winning her second round match here.

Martic Struggles against Navarro

Martic looked to have done well on grass this season but hasn’t made deep runs in the North American hardcourt swing so far. I mean these are still early days and she has won her opener here against Emma Navarro but a quick glance at her struggles in that opener could be symptomatic of her issues in hardcourt competitions.

Having lost to Sorana Cirstea in the first round of the Washington Open, Martic defeated Cristina Bucsa in the opener of the Montreal Open. Aryna Sabalenka ended her run in the second round there.

And then against Navarro, Martic needed an hour and 50 minutes to come through, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Muchova will be a far tougher opponent and that will make things a lot more difficult for Martic.

Muchova v Martic Prediction and Tip

Muchova shouldn’t have a lot of trouble here and can be expected to cruise to a straight-set win here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Muchova to win in straight sets: 10/11
