Nearly two years ago, Wawrinka fell out of the top 50 on the ATP Rankings charts.
Earlier this month, it was the first time since that day that the Swiss player returned back into the top 50 and while he entered this tournament ranked 51st in the world, a third round appearance here implies he will be back to his best ever ranking in over 22 months when the new rankings come out next week.
And that has been made possible because of Wawrinka’s fine win over the world number 10 Frances Tiafoe, who was the 1/2 favourite (with bet365) to overcome him.
What was even more surprising was that Tiafoe proved to be no match for Wawrinka in their hour and 20 minutes long encounter, with the former Grand Slam winner clinching his third round spot 6-3, 6-4.
Wawrinka, who is 4/9 (with bet365) to enter the last eight, will now hope to end Purcell’s fairy-tale run.

Purcell Shocks Ruud
It was no surprise that Casper Ruud had started off at 1/3 to win his second round match against a player ranked outside the top 70. But Purcell has been doing well in hardcourt competitions this season, especially on the lower circuit and that confidence seems to have rubbed off here.
The Aussie qualifier, who had earlier overcome Luka Van Assche and Alexei Popyrin to enter the main draw and then defeated Lloyd Harris in the first round, clinched a third round spot with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Ruud.
In a match lasting two hours, saved all but one of the seven break-points he faced, while he overcame his opponent’s serve on two occasions from the three chances he got. It was an indicator of both, how clinical Purcell was under pressure and his own ability to hold his nerves.
Purcell’s strong serving will also help him against Wawrinka but it’s typically difficult to stall his Swiss opponent when he gets on the roll. Which is why Purcell starts off an 8/5 (with bet365) underdog in this one.
