Jessica Pegula v Marie Bouzkova Head to Head

At the highest level, Pegula leads Bouzkova 2-1 with their hardcourt record reading 1-1. They have faced off on the ITF circuit as well in the past with both winning one apiece.

Pegula Struggles Past Trevisan

Martina Trevisan had entered the second round on the back of a victory over Bernarda Pera, who had herself been out of sorts in the lead-up. Against the Canadian Open winner, clay-court specialist Trevisan, however, wasn’t expected to do too much of note.

That reflected in the whoppingly one-sided odds in favour of Pegula who was 1/12 (with bet365) to clinch this.

Instead, Pegula struggled to make it through, needing to come back from being a set down to seal her third round berth. In a match lasting two hours and 22 minutes, Pegula made her way through to the next stage 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-3.

She was broken twice in the first set but came back both times to force a tie-breaker that she would go on to lose. In the second, Pegula would lose her serve yet again but came back to break Trevisan on three occasions before repeating the same dose in the decider.

While this showing could have been down to the lack of rest between the two tournaments, that’s only going to get worse for Pegula. Can she live up to her favourites odds here?

Bouzkova Edges Mertens

Having eased through to the second round with a straight-set win over Irina Begu, Bouzkova was forced into a decider by Elise Mertens but came through in three. In doing so Bouzkova sealed her first ever third round berth at the Cincinnati Open as she continued to show good form on the WTA 1000 circuit this season.

In the previous six appearances in WTA 1000 tournaments this season, Bouzkova has won her opener every time while having also made the third round on four occasions. This was the fifth and while she was made to work hard by Mertens, a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 over her opponent would have been deeply satisfying.

What was specially fascinating was Bouzkova’s break-point conversion, having overcome her opponent’s serve seven times in the encounter from the eight chances she had got.

And in doing so, she lived up to the 3/4 odds on offer (with bet365) going into the encounter.

What Bouzkova will now hope for is to make a good start against a possibly exhausted Pegula and take advantage of that.

Pegula v Bouzkova Prediction and Tip

The longer this encounter goes, the tougher it could get for Pegula who will be playing in her 10th match in 17 days and seventh in nine days. Might even see an upset win for Bouzkova.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Bouzkova to win a set: 2/5 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5 (with bet365)
