Swiatek Knocks Out Vondrousova

World no. 1 Iga Swiatek knocked out Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the quarterfinal of the Cincinnati Open on Friday.

Swiatek came back from a break down twice in the first set before winning it in the tiebreak. She then dominated the second set by breaking the world no. 10 threice and winning the contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

The 22-year-old Pole has improved her season record to 53-8. A four-time champion from six finals in 2023, Swiatek had begun her Cincinnati campaign with a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Danielle Collins in the second round and then had rallied from a set down to beat China’s Qinwen Zheng 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the third round.

This will be a 10th semifinal appearance for the season for Swiatek, and a third in a row. She was the champion in Warsaw, lost in the final four stage in Montreal last week and will now be playing for a spot in a 20th career final on Saturday. Swiatek has lost just four of her past 19 finals and given that record she remains the favourite in Cincinnati even though it is the first time that she has come this far in the tournament.

Gauff Eases Past Paolini

World no. 7 Coco Gauff reached a fifth semifinal of the season as the American eased past Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Gauff, who has not dropped a set this week, needed just an hour and 13 minutes to beat the Italian 6-3, 6-2.

Both the sets had a similar feel with Paoloni breaking early and taking a 0-2 lead. But Gauff rebounded on both the occasions and broke the world no. 43 thrice in each of the sets to sail into a maiden semifinal in Cincinnati.

Gauff had also won her first two rounds comfortably, beating Mayar Sherif 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and Linda Nosková 6-4, 6-0 in the third round.

The 19-year-old has a 36-13 record this year and will be looking to reach a third final of the season. She has a 2-0 record in finals in 2023, having captured the titles in Auckland and Washington.

Gauff, who has lost all 14 sets against Swuatek has a mountain to climb on Saturday. Can the four-time tour level champion pull of a surprise and reach a sixth final on Saturday?
