World no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz bounced back to beat Max Purcell on Friday to reach the semifinals in Cincinnati for the first time in his career. But the road to the semis has not been easy. The Spaniard has been taken to three sets in all his matches so far, but he has shown grit and determination to survive all three tests.

Alcaraz defeated Jordan Thompson 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the second round and then got his Canadian Open revenge against Tommy Paul, beating the American 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (0-7), 6-3 in the third round.

The top seed’s latest contest saw him bounce back after losing the opening set to the world no. 70. Strong of the net, Purcell won 37 of 72 to trouble Alcaraz. However, in the top seed saved 1 of 3 break points and converted 3 of 9 to win the two hour and 12 minutes contest 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Alcaraz improved his season record to 52-5 following the win. So far he is the only men’s player with more than 50 wins this season.

Hurkacz Tops Popyrin

Knocked out by Alcaraz in Toronto last Thursday, Hubert Hurkacz will have a chance to get a quick revenge over the Spaniard on Saturday after he reached his maiden semifinal in Cincinnati with a straight sets win over Alexei Popyrin on Friday.

Hurkacz, the world no. 20, struck 10 aces, did not face a break point while he converted 2 of 8 to beat the Aussie 6-1, 7-6 (10-8).

The 26-year-old Pole had a tough start to the tournament but the last two matches have been straight forward ones for him. He had needed three sets to see off Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round and then he rallied from a set down to beat defending champion Borna Coric in the second round.

He followed the two three-set victories with a straight sets shellacking of last year’s finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, beating the Greek, 6-3, 6-4.

Hurkacz, who won the title in Marseille this year, is 32-17 in 2023. The six time tour level champion will be looking to reach an eighth career final on Saturday and a third Masters 1000 final.

Alcaraz v Hurkacz Prediction and Tip

After playing three consecutive three-setters, Alcaraz would be prepared for another marathon on Saturday. Can Hurkacz pull off an upset this time and avenge his last week’s defeat in Toronto? That seems difficult despite the Pole’s form in the tournament as Alcaraz is the superior player and is expected to edge through.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Alcaraz to win: 2/5 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 4/5 (with bet365)
