Stephens Overcomes Slow Start against Davis

There was always that sense that there wasn’t much to choose between Stephens and her first round opponent, fellow American Lauren Davis and that’s exactly how the encounter went.

Having come into the match with a recent loss to Davis, revenge was probably on Stephens’ mind but things looked to have started off horribly for the 38th-ranked player.

She was broken in the very first game and then again in the fifth and seventh game to capitulate in the first set. Stephens retaliated by overcoming Davis’ serve in the third game before getting broken in the sixth with the scores now level at 3-3 in the second set.

It was at this point that Stephens ran away with the encounter as she won nine of the following 10 games to seal her second round spot in nearly two hours.

Interestingly, Stephens will now start off a second favourite at 13/10 (with bet365) against her teenaged opponent.

Andreeva Edges Past Korpatsch

Andreeva was supposed to take on one of the the oldest player on tour, Venus Williams but a late withdrawal by the American because of a knee injury meant she was replaced by lucky loser Tamara Korpatsch.

And Korpatsch made things very difficult for Andreeva with the world number 67 needing two hours and 17 minutes to clinch her second round berth.

Things looked like they were headed Andreeva’s way for starters as she blasted past her opponent’s serve, breaking her thrice in a row to bagel Korpatsch. But any hopes of a quick finish evaporated quickly as Korpatsch retaliated with much better serving and then broke Andreeva once to clinch the equaliser.

And when in the third, Korpatsch went 5-4 up and served for the match, it looked like Andreeva had given up on a golden chance to make the second round.

Except that Andreeva still fought on, breaking her opponent in the next two games and clinching the match off her fourth match-point.

Andreeva will now start off a 3/5 (with bet365) favourite to win this.

Stephens v Andreeva Prediction and Tip

  • Low Risk Tip: Andreeva to win: 4/6 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 4/5 (with bet365)
