While one hopes Kalinina will be fit for the US Open next week, the result benefitted Maria, who was already coming off a title win in a WTA 125 tournament and a semifinal at the Warsaw Open. More so her ranking points as Maria looks to get closer to her best ever ranking of 46th in the world.
Earlier in the tournament, Maria had found the going tough against Varvara Gracheva, having scraped to a three-set win after having started out a 4/5 favourite (with bet365).

Fernandez Has Dropped Two Games in Two Matches
Canadian wildcard Fernandez made it to the last eight stage of the Cleveland Open after her opponent, the lucky loser Clara Tauson failed to complete her match because of fitness-related concerns.
Fernandez had blanked Tauson 6-0 in the first set of their second round match before Tauson retired from it.
Earlier in the tournament, Fernandez had routed Linda Noskova 6-0, 6-2 in the first round and with this win over Tauson, the Canadian has managed successive wins in two of her last three tournaments.
Before that, Fernandez had only done this once this season and that was at the start of the year when she made the quarterfinal in Auckland.
