Ekaterina Alexandrova v Xinyu Wang Head to Head

Their only previous outing came at the 2023 Indian Wells Open with Wang surprising Alexandrova in straight sets.

Alexandrova Eases Past Sasnovich

Alexandrova had a solid time on grass more recently but returned in her first hardcourt competition in Cincinnati after a month’s gap to fall in the very first round there.

She had started off a 4/6 favourite (with bet365) in her opener there against Sorana Cirstea but was sent packing 6-0, 6-2 in a shocking result.

The Russian has done well to come back since then and register back to back victories here.

Against Patricia Tig, Alexandrova lost just five games to clinch her first round match before sending Aliaksandra Sasonovich out in the second round in straight sets too. Sure, she was pushed in the opening set and ended up needing an hour and 39 minutes but in the end she won 7-6 (2), 6-3 to make the quarterfinals.

In the first set both players lost their serves once apiece before four breaks of serves kick-started the second set. Miami Open quarterfinalist Alexandrova then saved four break-points in the seventh game before breaking her opponent in the eighth to seal the victory.

She will start off a favourite against a player ranked around 35 places behind her.

Wang Continues to Improve

She is 21 years old but has shown she has some talent that could soon see her break into the top 50 of the WTA Rankings.

Having entered this competition on the back of a career-best ranking of 56th in the world, Wang registered her second successive main draw win after having entered the Cleveland Open as a qualifier.

Having needed three sets in her opener against Clara Burel, the 7/5 underdog (with bet365) Wang made it past Jasmine Paolini in her second round encounter. And she was quick to finish off he job, winning 6-4, 6-3 to make the quarterfinal.

With a title under her belt last week on the ITF circuit, she has now followed it up with four wins here to enter the last eight stage. What that has meant is another win in this tournament will bring her into the top 50 of the rankings for the first time.

Can she usurp the might of Alexandrova in this one?
