Lehecka Holds Off Koepfer

World no. 35 Jiri Lehecka won a second straight three-setter on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinal in Winston-Salem.

The Czech player, who rallied past Mitchell Krueger 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round on Tuesday, needed just over two hours to beat Dominik Koepfer 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 on Wednesday.

Lehecka won 76% points on the back of his first delivery. He saved 3 of 4 break points and converted 2 of 4 to knock out the German. As a result of his two wins, the 21-year-old has improved his season record to 28-18.

The 2022 ATP NextGen runner-up was very good in the first quarter of the season, reaching his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal in Melbourne and the semifinals in Doha. It has been a roller coaster season since then, but overall he has been impressive.

Lehecka will be playing in a fifth tour level quarterfinal of the season on Thursday and his aim will be to reach the final four for a second time.

Purcell Takes Down Griekspoor

For the second consecutive week, Max Purcell will be playing an ATP quarterfinal. Last week, the world no. 47 had lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the last eight stage in Cincinnati, but this week he has a realistic chance of advancing to the semifinals in Winston Salem.

The Australian, who defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in Toronto and Casper Ruud and Stan Wawrinka in Cincinnati, knocked out world no. 25 and second seed Tallon Griekspoor on Wednesday.

Purcell out-aced the Dutchman 11 to 8 and double faulted just 4 times compared to Griespoor’s 9 to win the one hour and 47 minutes contest 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4).

The Aussie has now won 11 of his last 13 matches, which includes the qualifying round wins in Toronto and Cincinnati. A first improving player at the tour level, it was Purcell’s 50th win of the season, across levels. He has won three Challenger finals and finished runner-up thrice this year.

Purcell is yet to drop a set this week. He beat Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 6-1 in the first round and Andrey Kuznetsov 6-4, 6-1 in round two.
