Coric Battles Past Mmoh

Top seed Borna Coric moved into the quarterfinals with a tough three-set win over Michael Mmoh on Wednesday.

The Croatian, ranked no. 29th in the world, needed close to three hours to see off the American Mmoh 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.

Coric, who struck 11 aces and 40 winners in the match, saved all four break points that he faced and converted 2 of 8 break points to advance to the quarterfinals for the third time in as many appearances in Winston Salem.

The 26-year-old will however attempt to reach a first semifinal, having bowed out of the last eight in 2015 and 2017.

Coric had begun his 2023 Winston Salem challenge with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over Rinky Hijikata.

He is 21-17 in 2023 and will be playing in his sixth quarterfinal of the year with an aim to make the semis for a third time. His two semifinal appearances this year came in Madrid and Los Cabos.

Cerundolo Ends Kumar’s Run

Juan Manuel Cerundolo ended Omni Kumar’s run in the tournament, with a straight sets win on Wednesday.

The left-handed Argentine, playing his first tournament on hard court this season, is into his first ever tour level quarterfinal on the surface. He had won his maiden ATP title on his tour level debut in Cordoba two years ago.

Cerundolo, who has tasted most of his success on clay, has played 50 of his 55 matches this season on clay. He is making his season debut on hard court in Winston-Salem and is off to a 3-0 start. Cerundolo had beaten Roman Safiullin 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 in the first round and Yannick Hanfmann 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) in the  second round,

On Wednesday in the round of 16, the world no. 100 won 80% points on his first serve, saved 4 of 5 break points and converted 3 of 7 for a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the promising Kumar.

Also a quarterfinalist in Cordoba, it is his second last eight appearance of the season. Can he pull off a shock win on Thursday and reach a maiden tour level semifinal?
