It was exactly a year ago that Muchova had entered the 2022 US Open ranked 235th in the world. A first round loss obviously didn’t help but a couple of wins here and there ensured she had improved to 151st on the WTA charts at the end of the season.
Fast forward about eight months from the start of 2023 and Muchova has surprised a few with the kind of performances that would make most wonder what went about in this time.
Because she has now broken into her top 10 for the first time in her career, entering the 2023 US Open as the 10th seed as well.
And that’s despite Muchova playing one match on grass – and losing it – while making the final at the French Open and more recently at the Cincinnati Open. Iga Swiatek and Cori Gauff got the better of her there, even as she has downed the likes of Belinda Bencic, Maria Sakkari (twice) and Aryna Sabalenka (twice) this season.

Hunter Improved But Still Way Away from Her Best
Ranked 245th on the WTA charts, Storm has managed to pull it back a little as she enters the US Open main draw for only the second time in her career as the 167th-ranked player on the women’s circuit.
Hunter will know, however, that she has a mountain to climb here.
That’s to do with her record at the highest level, i.e. in WTA 250 competitions and above, in which she hasn’t won a single match on hardcourt surfaces. In fact the only time she has won a main draw match this season has been at the French Open and then in Hamburg, two clay court competitions.
Against a player of the calibre of Muchova and having struggled in hardcourt competitions, there’s no surprise she starts off a distant 13/2 (bet365) to overcome her opponent.
