It’s been nearly three months since Khachanov stepped on to a tennis court for a competitive match.
And this was after Khachanov was showing signs of some of the best tennis he has played in his career this season as he reached the semifinal of the Australian Open and the quarterfinal at the French Open. Thee were two results which helped him make it to the top 10 of the ATP Rankings.
Unfortunately for Khachanov, after putting on a fighting display in his French Open quarterfinals against Novak Djokovic, he suffered a stress fracture and a partial fracture in sacrum S1 bone, making it impossible for him to take to court.
He missed Wimbledon – for the second year in running after having not been allowed to participate in it last year – and all the tournaments in the lead-up to that Grand Slam too.
Since then, Khachanov hasn’t played in any competitive tennis either, having tried to make his return at the Canadian Open, a tournament in which he has made the semifinal on two previous occasions. He tried to feature at the Cincinnati Masters too but then opted out of it at the last minute.

Mmoh’s Won Just One Match at the US Open
Having first taken to court at the US Open in 2015 as Mmoh tried to qualify for the main draw, he has won just one round in all of these years. That’s one main draw match won in eight previous editions of the year’s final Grand Slam.
With that kind of a record under his belt, it’s tough to see him as much of a contender in this opener but for the reasons mentioned above.
For one, Khachanov himself has been untested in three months because of his injury.
Secondly, Mmoh has had a reasonably acceptable time on the hardcourts of USA more recently with a third round appearance at the Washington Open and another third round showing in Winston-Salem. Wins over Hubert Hurkacz and Marcos Giron show that he is very much in form and at his competitive best at the moment.
Which is why, going up against a player who has been out of action for a while could give Mmoh a chance. The American is 5/2 (with bet365) to win this.

Khachanov could feel rusty at the start of the match and if it goes deep, then a tad run-down towards the end. Which is why if Mmoh can give him an early run for his money, we could even see a surprise result here.
