Lloyd Harris v Guido Pella Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the 26 year old South African, and the Argentine, who is seven years older.

2021 Quarter-Finalist Harris

Two years ago, Harris reached the quarter-finals in Flushing Meadows, but he was unable to compete in 2022, having been ruled out with the right wrist injury that kept him out for much of last season.

Since then, he has come back using his Protected Ranking, still seeking the kind of form that took him, at his peak, to the fringes of the top 30 players in the world.

And he will take great heart from the fact that he won his maiden ATP title on the grass of Mallorca in June.

He has struggled for consistency since then though.

His Wimbledon campaign ended at the first round stage, and he lost in the second round in Atlanta, and the first in Washington.

The South African number one did reach the last eight of a Challenger event, but there was more disappointment in Cincinnati, where he suffered another first round loss.

Pella’s First Hard Court Match Since March

Like Harris, Pella has been playing off a Protected Ranking after an injury lay-off.

But, unlike the South African, he does not have the same pedigree in New York, having never been further than the second round there.

In fact, he is primarily regarded as a clay court player, although, ironically, it is at Wimbledon that he has achieved his greatest success, reaching the last eight there in 2019.

Since reaching the third round of Wimbledon this year, he has only played in two tournaments, both on clay, reaching the second round in Hamburg, and losing in the first in Kitzbuhel.

This will be his first match on an American hard court since losing in the second round in Miami back in March.

Harris v Pella Prediction and Tip

Familiarity with the surface as much as anything makes Harris the clear favourite for this match, especially if he can rediscover any of the form that  saw him reach the quarter-finals two years ago.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Harris to win: 5/9 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 31.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
