World no. 49 Tatjana Maria needed just an hour and 24 minutes to ease past Leylah Fernandez in the quarterfinal on Thursday.

Both players fought hard in the first set, with both coming back from a break down once each in the first seven games. But the German then broke again for a third time in the set to take a one-set-to-love lead.

With the first set in the bag, Maria dominated the second from start to finish. She broke the Canadian once in the first game and then again in the seventh game to seal a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Maria had begun her Cleveland campaign with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Varvara Gracheva in the first round before receiving a walkover against fifth seed Anhelina Kalinina in the second round.

This is the third time that she will be featuring in a WTA semifinal this year. The 36-year-old had picked her third career title earlier this year when she defended her Bogota pen title by beating Peyton Stearns in the final.

Maria was also a semifinalist in Warsaw last month. She is in tremendous form at the moment and on a seven-match win streak, having won the WTA 125 in Barranquilla earlier this month. She is 10-1 across levels since the Warsaw Open.
