World no. 22 Ekaterina Alexandrova bounced back after losing the first set to beat China’s Xinyu Wang in the quarterfinal of the Cleveland Open on Thursday.
Edged out by the Chinese player in the opening set, the Russian made a strong comeback by bagelling Wang in the second. The latter, however, didn’t allow Aexandrova to run away with the contest in the third as she put up a stern resistance. Both exchanged a break in the eighth and the ninth games before Alexandrova edged the final game and clinched the two hour contest 5-7, 6-0, 7-5.
The fourth seed Alexandrova saved 3 of 6 break points and converted 6 of 8 during the last eight contest.
She had won her earlier rounds in straight sets, beating Patricia Maria Țig 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round and Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in the second round.
This is the third time in 2023 that Alexandrova has reached the semifinals. She had won her fourth career title by defending the Rosmalen Open title this year. Additionally, she was also a semifinalist in Berlin.

Zhu Stuns Top Seed
Zhu Lin had come into the tournament having won just one match in her last five tournaments, which included the Wimbledon and four hard court events.
But the Chinese player has found form just in time for the U.S. Open. The world no. 48 knocked out the top seed Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinal of the Cleveland Open on Thursday to reach her fourth semifinal of the season.
Zhu, who catpured her maiden WTA title at the Hua Hin Open this year, needed just an hour and 27 minutes to beat the world no. 7, 6-4, 6-1.
She withstood eight aces from the Frenchwoman, saved 4 of 5 break points and converted half of the 10 to score a second top 10 win of her career and the season.
She had also won her first two rounds in style, demolishing Anna Blinkova 6-0, 6-3 in the first round and handing Julia Grabher a 6-4, 6-1 drubbing in the second round.
