For a player who was recently ranked ninth in the world, won five hardcourt titles including one at the Miami Masters, it’s a surprise that Hurkacz has never gone beyond the second round at the US Open.
Having first participated in this tournament in 2018, there have been four second round exits for Hurkacz while in 2019, he was sent packing in his opener itself.
Hurkacz now enters the US Open on the back of some fine hardcourt form under his belt.
Sure, he was sent packing from the Canadian Masters in the third round itself but that defeat came at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz, and in three gruelling sets. On the other hand, Hurkacz entered the semifinal stage in Cincinnati, having beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas in the process.

Huesler Has Had an Underwhelming Season
We are in the eighth month of the season and Huesler has recorded a total of nine main draw wins at the highest level so far. Only nine of them and the only tournament in which he won successive matches was in January at the United Cup in which he was up against very low-ranked players.
What’s been rather surprising is that for a player who has liked his time on clay, his win-loss record for 2023 has been a paltry 3-10 on that surface.
More recently he did win a round on the hardcourts of the Winston-Salem Open but even that victory had come on the back of five successive main draw losses. This doesn’t include a failure to qualify for the Cincinnati Masters either.
Which is why after having hit a career-best ranking of 47th in February this year, Huesler has fallen to his currently ranking of 87.
