Kecmanovic Desperate For Wins

Miomir Kecmanovic is a very good tennis player, but his career hasn’t looked that great recently. He’s picked up some wins leading up to the US Open (vs. Garin in Toronto), and a good draw gives him a chance to progress to the second round.

He never played against his opponent, but it’s not an opponent that should strike fear into your heart. Varillas is a good, aggressive tennis player but likely won’t amount to much outside of clay courts. Kecmanovic, on the other hand, grew up on hard courts.

His 8-9 record on the surface this year won’t inspire anybody, but it’s been a down year generally for him. I still have faith that he’ll find his better level at the US Open and advance to the next round.

He should have no problems against a player whose best tennis comes solely on clay.

Varillas More a Clay-Court Guy

Juan Pablo Varillas hasn’t won many matches on hard court in his career. He’s only 2-4 this year and 33-30 in his career. Taking down a much more experienced player on the surface who likely is the more talented player as well will be hard.

Varillas has generally had an okay year with a 21-21 record so far, but he can certainly play a bit better. On hard courts, though it’s going to be a struggle.

He only played one match leading up to the US Open, and it was a defeat in three sets to Alex Michelsen who is a rising player from the US. He might face similar issues against Kecmanovic, but the Serbian can be put under pressure. If Varrilas can create pressure during rallies, he might get some chances.

I don’t think it will be enough to win the match because his own playstyle will certainly see him blast the ball wide far too many times.

Kecmanovic v Varillas Prediction and Tip

I see Kecmanovic winning this match comfortably but I could see Varillas taking one set so I’ll back at least four sets.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 3,5 sets in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
