Varvara Graheva v Taylor Townsend Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the 23 year old naturalised Frenchwoman, and the American, who is four years older.

Gracheva Competing as Frenchwoman for the First Time

Although Gracheva made her debut at the US Open in 2019, this will be the first time she has appeared as a Frenchwoman, having changed nationality from Russian only in June this year.

She has a reasonable record at Flushing Meadows, having reached the third round in both 2020 and again the following year.

And having reached the fourth round of both Indian Wells and Miami earlier this year, American hard courts should hold no fears for her.

However, getting her new passport has coincided with a dip in form, and, since reaching the quarter-finals on grass at Bad Homburg, she has not been beyond the second round of any tournament.

She failed to qualify in Washington and was beaten in the first round in Montreal.

In Cincinnati she came through qualifying and made the second round, but her struggles continued in Cleveland with another first round defeat.

Doubles Specialist Townsend

Townsend is better known as a doubles’ player.

Ranked inside the top five in the world, she reached the final in the women’s event last year, and has also been a semi-finalist in both the women’s and mixed events in New York.

This year, she reached the final of the French and Miami Opens, and won the title in Cincinnati recently.

Her singles record does not compare, although she reached her first Challenger final in Florence in May on clay, losing to the Italian Jasmine Paolini.

However, it was at this tournament four years ago that she achieved her best individual result in a Grand Slam, reaching the fourth round.

There has been little in her recent form to suggest she is capable of a repeat this time round. She was beaten in the third round of qualifying for Wimbledon, and the second round of qualifying for Cincinnati.

Gracheva v Townsend Prediction and Tip

Whilst not exactly an after thought for the American, her singles campaign is probably of secondary importance than the doubles, where she will expect to be one of the challengers for the title.

And that may play into the hands of Gracheva, who needs some good results to go with her newfound changed national status.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Gracheva to win: 7/9 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 6/5 (with bet365)
