It has been a productive season for world no. 67 Zhizhen Zhang, who brings a 12-13 tour level record to the U.S. Open.
He will be playing in the New York major for the second time in his career after making a first round exit from the tournament last year. Zhang recorded his first wins in a Grand Slam this year, reaching the third round at the French Open and also the first wins at Masters 1000 level, making it to the quarterfinals in Madrid.
Those facts are a clear indicator that the 26-year-old is growing as a clay court player. But when it comes to hard courts, there is still work to do for the Chinese. He is 0-3 at the tour level this year and 6-12 overall on the surface.
So he may find things difficult against the more accomplished hard court opponent in the first round.
