Beatriz Haddad Maia v Sloane Stephens Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in 2019 with Haddad Maia winning that Acapulco Open match in straight sets.

Haddad Maia Hoping Back Injury Behind Her

Haddad Maia was down a set and had just been broken again in the second set by Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon 2023 when she was forced to retire from that encounter because of a back injury.

It was a tearful end to Haddad Maia’s campaign but the bigger question from the context of the US Open is whether she is fully fit again.

I mean sure, she did feature in both, the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open but her performances there seemed to suggest there were still a few lingering doubts about her fitness. A win over Magdalena Frech in Montreal was followed by a bitter loss to Leylah Fernandez in the second round.

And while she was up against Karolina Muchova in the opener in Cincinnati, she fell to another defeat there.

What this means is that Haddad Maia would have hoped for a kinder first round draw than a former US Open winner in Stephens. Which is also why there’s not much to choose between the two as Haddad Maia starts off a mere 4/5 favourite (with bet365).

Stephens Showing Signs of Improvement

In the first half of the season, Stephens had played 11 matches in hardcourt competitions and won a mere four of them. This included opening round defeats at five of the tournaments.

Stephens has turned a bit of that around in the second part of the year having reached the third round at all the three North American hardcourt competitions she has played in this in August.

Wins over Anhelina Kalinina, Caroline Garcia and Mirra Andreeva in Montreal, Cincinnati and Cleveland respectively seem to suggest she is slowly finding the kind of consistency that has been lacking from her game in the near term.

Add that to a 13-5 record on clay this year and it’s no surprise that Stephens has been able to maintain her top 40 ranking.

Which is also why she starts off at 1/1 odds to win her opener (with bet365) despite taking on a seeded player first up.

Haddad Maia v Stephens Prediction and Tip

This is a tough one to call but we think that Stephens could find a way past her opponent here. Could see three sets too.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Stephens to win: 1/1 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
