Jeļena Ostapenko v Jasmine Paolini Head to Head

There has been one ITF level meeting between these two that came way back in 2014. Paolini was the winner there.

Ostapenko’s Struggled Since Eastbourne Injury

A title winner at the Birmingham International in June, Ostapenko opted to play in Eastbourne the following week too. Not just in singles, but doubles as well and that led to her breaking down in her quarterfinal match against Camila Giorgi.

Down a set she was forced to retire from that encounter and since then, Ostapenko hasn’t had too much of a run.

It might be to do with her fitness concerns or just one of those things that happen to players after having had a reasonably strong season but the fact is that the 20th-ranked Ostapenko enters this tournament on the back of four defeats from her last six matches.

These include an opening round exit at the WTA 1000 event in Montreal and a second round ouster in Cincinnati.

Ostapenko is a 2/5 favourite (with bet365) to win this opener but win or lose, one thing’s for certain, she will be putting up a fight as she always does.

Paolini in Good Touch in Hardcourt Tennis

In the first half of the season, Paolini had won just one main draw match in an outdoor hardcourt tournament, having featured in seven of them. There was clearly a huge struggle for the Italian.

Things have changed for the better in the second half with clay playing no small part in the changing confidence for the Italian.

She was a finalist at both, the Makarska Open and in Palermo, and she has followed that up with excellent going in the North American hardcourt swing. A win over Donna Vekic earned her a third round place at the Canadian Open before Paolini came through the qualifiers in Cincinnati to make it to the quarterfinals.

While Elena Rybakina wasn’t at her fittest, Paolini was leading her 5-2 in the second set when the former Wimbledon winner retired from their third round match there.

This has enabled Paolini to touch a career-best ranking of 35th in the world. Having gotten knocked out in the first round here last year, she will hope to do better than that and improve her ranking even further.

Her opponent here won’t make things any easy and that’s reflected in the 9/5 odds on offer for her win with bet365.

Ostapenko v Paolini Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko can be expected to come through but not before Paolini has given her a good run. Might even see a three-setter here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 1/2 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
