Dominic Thiem v Alexander Bublik Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2019 French Open where Thiem won in four sets.

Thiem Hasn’t Played Any Hardcourt Tennis Since Miami

With clay having treated Thiem way better than hardcourt surfaces since his return from his wrist injury, it’s not much of a surprise to see Thiem prefer featuring in the Kitzbuhel Open earlier this month.

Thiem made the final of that competition, the first time he had done that in nearly three years. While he lost to Sebastian Baez, that run to the title-deciding round would have been a huge relief for the Austrian player.

What was surprising to see was that Thiem followed that up with no competitive tennis at all, missing the Canadian Masters and Cincinnati Masters.

He was expected to feature in the Winston-Salem Open in the week leading up to this year’s US Open but suffered from a bout of gastroenteritis. That forced him to withdraw from the competition, making it a difficult start to the season’s final major for him.

The former US Open winner starts off a 7/5 underdog with bet365 to win this.

Bublik Coming off Three Successive Defeats

Having started the season off with eight successive losses, it’s a surprise that Bublik has actually managed to hit a career-high ranking of 25th in the world in the same year.

The Kazakh player has his title win at Halle to credit for that where he shocked the likes of Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev on his way to lifting the title. He followed that up with a fourth round appearance at Wimbledon but has lost three in a row since then.

Rublev avenged the Halle loss at Wimbledon before Bublik fell in his openers at both, the Washington Open and Canadian Masters. It was Gael Monfils and Hurbert Hurkacz who ended his campaigns there.

What that does is to give Bublik a 3-10 win-loss record in hardcourt competitions this season, and while he is a 3/5 favourite to win this (with bet365), it could get tricky. The saving grace is his opponent’s form on this surface is no better.

Thiem v Bublik Prediction and Tip

While Bublik starts off a favourite he is no great form on hardcourt surfaces and that could make it slightly difficult for him. Expecting both players to win a set in this one.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Bublik to win AND Both players to win a set: 11/8 (with bet365)
