Roman Safiullin v Marco Cecchinato Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between Safiullin, who is 26 years old, and the Italian, who is four years older.

Safiullin Makes New York Main Draw Debut

A Grand Slam champion from his junior days, Safiullin will be making his main draw debut in New York, having failed to qualify last year.

However, having reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this year, beating both Roberto Batuista-Agut and Denis Shapovalov along the way, he should not be underestimated.

Although he has yet to win a senior ATP title, he has achieved success on the junior tours, and won a Challenger event in Koblenz in February.

That was the fourth Challenger success of his career.

His two matches since that Wimbledon run, though, have both ended in three set defeats.

He was beaten in the first round of Cincinnati by Nicolas Jarry and at the same stage in Winston Salem by Juan Manuel Cerundulo.

Cecchinato’s Terrible US Open Record

Cecchinato has never been beyond the first round of the US Open, having made his main draw debut back in 2015.

In fact, the only Grand Slam where he has ever won a match is the French Open, although his semi-final appearance in 2018 was very much an outlier.

The Italian is primarily regarded as a clay court player, with all five of his senior finals, and all three of his victories, coming on the surface, although the most recent of those was four years ago.

If recent form is any guide he will not be confident coming into this match, having won just one match in the last three months, and that was on the clay of Umag.

His only previous American hard court match this summer was in Winston Salem last week, where he was easily beaten in straight sets by the Australian, Max Purcell.

Safiullin v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

Given Cecchinato’s terrible record in New York, his supporters would not be feeling confident about his ability to progress anyway, but, when his recent poor form is taken into account as well, his chances appear even slimmer.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Safiullin to win: 5/9 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 31.5 games in the match: 5/4 (with bet365)
