Kalinina on a Slow Run

Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina is set to start her US Open campaign with little momentum. In her four warm-up tournaments spread across Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati, and Cleveland, she has managed just two wins against four losses.

The victories came against lower-ranked players like Ana Bogdan and Lin Zhu. As for the defeats, they can be justified to some extent seeing that she fell against some prominent names like Ons Jabeur (pushing to three sets), Jennifer Brady, and Sloane Stephens.

Most recently, Kalinina was set to play Tatjana Maria in Cleveland but withdrew from the match.

Anhelina’s season record now stands at 20-19 with a singles ranking of World No. 28. This is largely due to her historic runner-up feat in the Italian Open, where she beat the likes of Madison Keys, Sofia Kenin, Beatriz Maia and Veronika Kudermetova en route.

The pressure is now on the 28th seed to prove she is not a one-hit-wonder. It will be a task to do that in New York, seeing that she has never made it beyond round two in the Slam.

Tormo in Form

26-year-old Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo is coming off a title run in Tennis in the Land Open. The world number 95 bagged her second WTA singles title in Cleveland last week, beating Ekaterina Alexandrova in the final.

That brilliant final win was preceded by victories against Kudermetova, Stephens, and Maria over the week. Before that, Sara had to go through a rut which saw early-round losses in many tournaments.

Earlier in the season, Tormo was also a runner-up in ITF Madrid.

These results are certainly worth praising, considering that the Spaniard started the 2023 season only in April after a six-month hiatus. The former #36 has bagged 24 wins against 12 losses – with a good chunk of those coming on clay.

Tormo’s best result at the Flushing Meadows stands in the form of a round-three showing in the 2021 edition.

Kalinina v Tormo Prediction and Tip

Tormo should feel confident of her chances for this one, considering how she fared last week and Kalinina’s slow spell. We may be looking at a long affair here.
