Poland’s Magda Linette, ranked World No. 24, hasn’t made it to the closing rounds of a singles WTA event since her historic semifinal stint at the Australian Open in January.
The 31-year-old has since competed in several tournaments but has had to make do with early to mid-stage defeats.
Her notable results over the year include a fourth-round showing in the Miami Open and round-three feats in Wimbledon and the Italian Open.
Linette also participated in the US Open build-up tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati but lost her opening matches to Victoria Azarenka and Ann Li, respectively.
Magda has done a bit better as a doubles player, reaching the penultimate stage in Miami and Indian Wells.
All in all, Linette’s singles record stands at 20-19 for the season.

Sasnovich in a Similar Boat
Aliakasandra Sasnovich will participate in her 10th US Open with a singles ranking of #68 and a pretty mediocre season. In fact, 2023 has been her worst-performing year since the 2020 spell.
With 18 wins to 20 losses, the 29-year-old Belarusian has fallen hard and finds herself facing a steep climb back into the top 30.
Most of her year has gone by incurring mid-round defeats. The only time where she managed to win more than two main draw matches in a week was in Den Bosch, where she was a semifinalist.
Sasnovich last played in Cleveland, where, as a qualifier, she made it as far as round two before losing to Ekaterina Alexandrova.

This should be an interesting fixture. Both players are coming off a less-than-average season and find themselves asking serious questions about their form. Both are well-skilled and, on their best day, can beat a top-10 player.
