Anna Blinkova of Russia started August on a solid note by reaching her career-best singles ranking as World No. 34. The fire has since fizzled, evidenced by her poor performances across four US Open build-up events.
In the Citi Open, she fell in the qualifiers to the then #544 Clervie Ngounoue in straight sets. That was followed by a round two exit to Daria Kasatkina in Montreal.
In Cincinnati and Cleveland next, Blinkova lost her opening bouts to Petra Kvitova and Lin Zhu.
Amidst these results, it is hard to imagine Anna better her previous US Open records. In her five appearances so far, she has not bagged a main-draw win at the Flushing Meadows.
As for her overall form in 2023, Blinkova is 25-22, with a runner-up feat in Strasbourg being her best showing. In addition, she was a semifinalist in Hobart and a quarterfinalist in Bad Homburg.

Burrage Makes her US Open Debut
England’s Jodie Burrage will make her main-draw US Open debut on Tuesday.
The current World No. 96 has had a fairly respectable season that has earned her a ticket among the elites of the WTA Tour. This is her chance to make an impact.
So far this year, she has two ITF finals and her first WTA singles final – the latter coming in the Nottingham Open. Burrage also won her first WTA doubles title in the Golden Gate Open this month with Olivia Gadecki.
That said, there is plenty of room for improvement for Jodie; she did lose her opening matches in Chicago and Montreal. The same trend was also seen in other tournaments this season. But we can’t fault her for this – the 24-year-old is making progress at her pace, and the patience will reap the rewards.
All things considered, Burrage is coming off a good year (25-18) and should feel confident about her prospects.
