Kaia Kanepi is set to feature in her 15th US Open. She has two quarterfinal appearances through the years – the last one coming in 2017. Interestingly, the 38-year-old Estonian has lost in round two the last four times at the Flushing Meadows.
Kanepi has spent the 2023 season alternating between ITF and WTA events. All in all, her record stands at 16-19 – dotted with mixed results.
Case in point, she went through a seven-match losing streak early in the season before finding some semblance of form. Eventually, Kaia did take home an ITF silverware from Amstelveen.

Strycova building her Form
Former doubles number Barbora Strycova is enjoying a good comeback on the WTA Tour. After retiring in 2021, she returned to professional tennis in April this year.
On the singles side, she has managed three wins against seven losses – losing to Ankita Raina most recently in Prague. As a doubles player, however, the Czech won the Wimbledon Doubles with Su-Wei Hsieh.
Of course, her expectations in the singles draw may not be that high; at the very most, it may be a warm-up for her of sorts for her doubles stint in New York. She is paired with the Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and will play her first match on Wednesday.
Overall, Strycova has had an impeccable doubles career with 51 WTA finals (32 titles, 19 runner-ups). That kind of experience and skill should be entertaining to see against Kanepi’s play, who herself has had a long, impeccable career.
