Having won the Australian Open earlier this year, Sabalenka has moved swiftly to add two more titles to her kitty – at Adelaide before that opening Grand Slam and then again in Madrid on clay.
She did make it to the semifinal at the French Open as well and followed that up with another last four appearance at Wimbledon, continuing her excellent form all year.
More recently, however, Sabalenka hasn’t been able to match up to her own lofty standards, having gotten knocked out of the Canadian Open in the third round and then failing to reach the title-decider in Cincinnati either.
Which is why, a strong start at this year’s US Open was much needed and that’s exactly what Sabalenka did. The world number two routed Maryna Zanevska 6-3, 6-2 in a match lasting an hour and 19 minutes.

Burrage Stuns Blinkova for Maiden Win
Burrage is known to do well on grass and while she has notched up a few hardcourt wins at the lower level of tennis, it hasn’t been often that she has won too much at the highest level.
Which is why Burrage had come into the opener here against Anna Blinkova as a second favourite, with bet365 offering 8/5 for her win.
An hour and 16 minutes later, Burrage had stunned Blinkova 6-3, 6-4 to register her first ever US Open main draw victory.
What made the win even more special was Burrage, on her main draw debut at this tournament, did not face a single break-point as she won 81% of her first serve points. 26 winners punctuated her victory and while she hit almost as many unforced errors as her opponent – 21 to Blinkova’s 22 – she found her way to break her opponent once in each of the two sets.
